MUSIC REVIEW: Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard, Steve Swallow’s Trios

With a jazz trio consisting of Steve Swallow on bass, a pianist with the last name of Bley, a horn player, and no drummer, it’s understandable that the new album Trios (ECM) by Swallow, pianist Carla Bley, and saxophonist Andy Sheppard might make some fans of dark and moody jazz think of the Jimmy Giuffre 3, the early-’60s trio which consisted of Swallow, pianist Paul Bley (Carla’s then husband), and Giuffre on clarinet. But while Trios has a similarly dark mood and palette, that’s where the similarities end.

GAME NEWS: New Model Of PlayStation Vita Announced

This morning in Japan, Sony held a press conference to announce (among other things) a new version of the PlayStation Vita.

The new version will be 20% thinner and 15% lighter, and will also have a slightly improved battery that lasts an hour longer than the original model.

It will also swap its OLED screen for an LCD, and will have a 1GB internal hard drive, though Sony also announced a new 64GB memory card for the Vita.

The new Vita will also be available in white, pink, light blue, and grey, as well as the original black.

It will be relased on October 10 in Japan, where stores are already accepting pre-orders, and while there was no word as to when or if this version would be released in the U.S. or anywhere else, it’s a good bet that it will at some point.

Whether we’ll get the white, gray, pink, or blue models as well as the black one, however, is a different story.

“Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes” Video Game Preview

At a recent event held, in part, to announce the opening of their new Los Angeles studio, Konami and Kojima Productions revealed new details about the upcoming stealth action game Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Set in the studio’s theater, the event consisted of a previously seen trailer, a live demo — which was running on a PC and is representative of how the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will look — and a Q&A session with director Hideo Kojima and art director Yoji Shinkawa that we were not allowed to record.

GAME REVIEW: Puppeteer

With lots of running and jumping in a two-dimensional world so photorealistic that it looks like it’s made of wood, cloth, and Elmer’s glue, Puppeteer is going to remind a lot of people of the LittleBigPlanet games. Heck, it’s even got a British narrator. But this adorable and inventive platformer from SCE Japan Studio (which Sony is publishing for the PlayStation 3, naturally) is different enough that both lovers and haters of L.B.P. might get a kick out of it.
