Avengers: Endgame Review

Though it’s not the last Marvel movie — not by a long shot — Avengers: Endgame is the final chapter in the saga they began eleven years ago with Iron Man. But what you realize about midway through watching it is that Avengers: Endgame is also the culmination of everything Marvel has been doing since Iron Man, and brings this saga to an even more satisfying conclusion than anyone could’ve imagined.

“Mortal Kombat 11” Single-Player Review

While the Mortal Kombat games have always favored those who’d prefer to fight with friends, there are many fans of this fighting game series who’d rather to go it alone. It is for this latter group — of which I am a proud member — that I present the following review of Mortal Kombat 11 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch) as a single-player game.

Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet’s Metamodal Review

In my never ending quest to find jazz that is beautiful and moody but also unlike anything I already own, I present the Metamodal (CD, digital), the second album by the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet, on which the titular Greek lyra player once again teams with a trio of more typical jazz musicians, and comes up with something rather unique and beautiful.

Archer: Danger Island: The Complete Season Nine DVD Review

Much like episodes of the animated show they collect, the recent seasonal sets for Archerare not as good as the earlier ones. But if, like me, you continue to be a fan of this weird and wild show, you’ll still enjoy the DVD version of Archer: Danger Island: The Complete Season Nine.

“Far Cry New Dawn” Review

At the end of Far Cry 5, a massive nuclear attack destroyed the civilized world. It is the aftermath of this apocalypse that we find Far Cry New Dawn (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC). But while it doesn’t take advantage of the new setting as much as it could, it still manages to be the most engaging Far Cry game since this series changed from a straight sci-fi shooter to an open world role-playing gun game with 2008’s Far Cry 2.

“Tom Clancy’s The Division 2” Single-Player Review

Three years ago, at a press event for The Division, the game’s Creative Director Magnus Jansen assured me that while the shooter had been built for co-op, it could be played solo as well. And while he was right, they certainly didn’t make it easy. But while the same is true for The Division 2 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC), certain changes make this otherwise impressive sequel even less friendly (and thus less fun) for those who don’t play well with others.

Devil May Cry 5 Review

If there’s one thing that an action game needs, it’s, well, action. But while that may be an obvious thing to say about a game like Devil May Cry 5 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC), it’s clearly not obvious enough, if the occasional lack of it in this game is any indication.

Captain Marvel Review

While the Marvel movies introduce new characters with almost every installment, it’s been a while since they’ve done an origin story that’s as exciting, clever, and just plain well done as Captain Marvel. In fact, you’d have to go back eight years, to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, to find an introduction that’s this effortlessly exhilarating.

The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s South Of Reality Review

On their debut album Monolith Of Phobos, The Claypool Lennon Delirium — a collaboration between Primus singer / bassist Les Claypool and singer / guitarist Sean Lennon — the tunes fell into three distinct categories: songs that employed the latter’s penchant for Beatles-esque harmonies and psychedelia, ones dominated by Claypool’s distinctive bass and vocals, and a couple that deftly mixed them together. But while there’s plenty of the former and the latter on South Of Reality (CD, vinyl, digital), their second full-length collection of originals, Claypool fans hoping for more of the middle will be disappointed.
