Exclusive Interview: “Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy: The Graphic Adaptation” Art Director / Illustrator Paul Karasik

In 1994, art director Paul Karasik worked with iconic author Paul Auster and comic book artist David Mazzucchelli [Batman: Year One] on a graphic novel adaptation of Auster’s 1985 noir detective mystery novel City Of Glass.

But while Glass was never a lone detective story — it was actually part of a series with 1986’s Ghosts and 1986’s The Locked Room that Auster called The New York Trilogy — graphic novels of the other two books were not to be.

That is, until now. In Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy: The Graphic Adaptation (hardcover, Kindle), fans of the titular novels not only get the original adaptation of City Of Glass, but also new graphic novels of Ghosts and The Locked Room.

In the following email interview, Karasik — who served as the art director on the collection, as well as the artist on The Locked Room — talks about how this came together, how Glass happened back in the day, and how Auster was involved in both.

Exclusive Interview: “Tongues” Author / Artist Anders Nilsen

Prometheus has long been a symbol of rebellion. After all, he gave humanity the gift of fire, in defiance of the gods, and was punished with eternal torment for his trouble.

It’s a myth that has inspired countless retelling and reworkings, including, most famously, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Or, to use its full name, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

Now author and artist Anders Nilsen is putting his own spin on this Greek myth with his new graphic novel Tongues, Volume 1 (hardcover, Kindle), which moves this story to modern times and the middle east.

In the following email interview, Nilson explains why he decided to do his own version of Prometheus, as well as what else influenced both the text and the art.

Exclusive Interview: “All Our Ordinary Stories” Author / Artist Teresa Wong

It’s both a great and terrible time to be an immigrant, no matter what country you’re emigrating to. But it is in great and terrible times that we often get the best art.

In Teresa Wong’s new collection of cartoons, All Our Ordinary Stories (paperback, Kindle), she presents stories about “…my life growing up as a child of Chinese-Canadian immigrants.”

In the following email interview, Wong talks about what inspired and influenced this memoir, as well as whether she’s shown it to her parents yet.

Exclusive Interview: “Something, Not Nothing” Author / Artist Sarah Leavitt

We all deal in grief in our own ways. Some people retreat into themselves, others find solace in a bottle, still others turn to their friends and loved ones for solace.

For cartoonist Sarah Leavitt, the death of her longtime partner Donimo — who had chronic health issues, and chose to end her suffering in April of 2020 — her way of dealing was to write and draw the comics she’s now collected as Something, Not Nothing: A Story Of Grief And Love (paperback, Kindle).

In the following email interview, Leavitt explains what she wrote about in these comics, why she decided to release them for all to see, and whether doing all of this helped her deal with her grief.

“The Falcon And The Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season” 4K, Blu-ray Review

While Captain America: Brave New World won’t be out until February 14th, 2025, Disney is probably hoping to stir some excitement for that movie by releasing what will eventually become regarded as its prequel TV series, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, on 4K and Blu-ray as the The Falcon And The Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season.

“Moon Knight: The Complete First Season” 4K, Blu-ray Review

One of the interesting things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is how they haven’t just stuck to the well-known characters. Sure, we’ve seen a lot of Spider-Man, The Hulk, and Captain America, but we’ve also had adventures with such relatively lesser known characters as The Winter Solider, Ms. Marvel, and the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Which brings me to Moon Knight, or rather, to the Disney+ show Moon Knight — and, more specifically, the 4K and Blu-ray versions of Moon Knight: The Complete First Season — in which this somewhat unknown Marvel anti-hero is getting his time in the sun. Well, moon.

Exclusive Interview: “Victory Parade” Writer / Artist Leela Corman

It’s always interesting to consider who and what had an influence on something.

Take Leela Corman’s new graphic novel Victory Parade (hardcover, Kindle), which, as she says in the following email interview, was influenced by such seemingly disparate influences as the iconic experimental band Einstürzende Neubauten, the sitcom M*A*S*H, author Primo Levi, singer Josephine Baker, and painter Otto Dix, to highlight a few.

Exclusive Interview: “Feeding Ghosts” Writer / Artist Tessa Hulls

When people write memoirs, they often can’t help but bring their parents and other relatives into their story.
