Disintegration Single-Player Review

While helicopters have been powerful enemies in countless shooters, there haven’t been too many games lately where you get to fly one into combat yourself. But in the sci-fi first-person shooter Disintegration (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC), you get to pilot a futuristic helicopter-like vehicle into battle. And while it isn’t always as exciting as trying to shoot down an attack copter with a pistol is in other games, Disintegration still manages to be entertaining despite its many flaws.

(NOTE: With multiplayer unavailable until the game launches on June 16th, what follows is a look at this game’s single-player campaign. A more complete review is forthcoming.)

What The Golf? Video Game Review

As someone who decidedly prefers mini golf to the real thing, I’ve always been drawn more to goofy or arcade-like golf video games than realistic simulations. And What The Golf? (Switch, PC, Apple Arcade) may just be the goofiest arcade-like golf game I’ve ever played. Which is also why it’s the most fun I’ve had on the links, virtual or otherwise, in years.

Maneater Video Game Review

At a time when we shouldn’t be going to be the beach for other reasons, there’s a perverse and reverse pleasure to playing Maneater (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch), a new action game in which you get to be the original beach deterrent: a shark. It’s just too bad that the pleasure doesn’t last a lot longer.

Exclusive Interview: Young Guns Writer Austin Moorhead

It’s become cliché for gamers to make jokes about how their parents told them they were wasting their lives playing those damn video games while standing next to the sports car they just bought with the money they made in a video game tournament. But for anyone who wonders how professional video game playing became something that’s no joke, there’s Young Guns: Obsession, Overwatch, And The Future of Gaming (paperback, Kindle, audiobook). In the following email interview about it, writer Austin Moorhead discuss what prompted him to write this book, as well as the famous sports book that influenced his approach.

DOOM Eternal Review

DOOM has always been about simplicity. The simple joy of running around and shooting demons without having to worry about looting or crafting or talking to anyone so you can complete multi-layered objectives. But while the new DOOM Eternal (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch, Stadia) continues this approach, the good people at iD Software have added some interesting new mechanics to this sci-fi first-person shooter, and this sequel is all the better for it.

“Overpass” Review

Thanks to the success of such games as Super Meat Boy and the Demon Souls / Dark Souls series, there’s been a lot of interest lately in video games that are intentionally hard. But there’s a big difference between challenging and infuriating. And it’s on the wrong side of things that we find Overpass (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch), an off-road racing game that’s decidedly more frustrating than fun.

Outriders Hands-On Preview

It’s usually a good sign when a game studio lets members of the media play their game long before it’s out or it even has a release date. Which bodes well for People Can Fly’s upcoming shooter RPG Outriders. Slated to be released this holiday for Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC by Square-Enix, the third-person sci-fi shooter was the subject of a hands-on preview event last week in Los Angeles, where members of the game and geek press got a chance to play the game’s opening hours.

What follows are my impression of the game, which I played on a “high spec” PC, but with an Xbox controller. Suffice it to say, spoilers follow.

“Zombie Army 4: Dead War” Review

Facing defeat at the end of World War II, Hitler made a last-ditch attempt at victory by raising his dead soldiers from the grave. But while this led to his own death at the end of Zombie Army Trilogy, the new Zombie Army 4: Dead War (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC) shows that the war against the living impaired is still being waged. And while it may not be going well for those hoping to stay alive and free, those hoping to shoot lots of Nazi zombies from the third-person perspective will mostly enjoy this frantic shooter. Mostly.

Disintegration Hands-On Preview

In preparation for its Open Technical Beta On January 31st and February 1st, the good people of V1 Interactive recently held a Closed Technical Beta for their upcoming sci-fi first-person shooter Disintegration (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC). In it, members of the media and others had an opportunity to play two of the game’s three multiplayer modes, “Retrieval” and “Zone Control.”

What follows are my impressions of the game.
