While dogs and small children can be adorable, they can also be a huge pain in the ass when you want them to do something. Sometimes, they just don’t listen. But that’s only one of the reasons why the third-person action game The Last Guardian (PlayStation 4) — in which you help a kid and a dog-like animal get around — is so infuriating and disappointing.
In honor of the upcoming movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the recent release of the PlayStation Virtual Reality headset, EA will release a VR-only add-on for the PlayStation 4 version of Star Wars Battlefront called Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One X-Wing VR Mission on December 6th (the same day the Rogue One: Scarif add-on is released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC editions of Star Wars Battlefront).
Developed by Criterion Games, this single-player mission casts you as a rookie Rebel pilot who flies their X-Wing into battle against The Empire in a mission that’s set around the time of, and narratively connected to, the movie. It even features an appearance by a certain someone from the film. Best of all, this short but super sweet add-on will be free. Well, assuming you own the PlayStation 4 version of Star Wars Battlefront. And a PSVR system. And you ask nicely.
In anticipation of the Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One X-Wing VR Mission‘s imminent release, EA invited some journalists (myself included) to their Los Angeles offices to play through the mission and then chat with Criterion Games’ Designer John Stanley and Art Director Kieran Crimmins.
In the four years since Chris Davis and Matthew Arevalo started Loot Crate — the service that sends subscribers a box of geeky goodies every month — the company has not only included tons of gaming toys, collectibles, and t-shirts, but they’ve also done one-off, single-theme creates for the Mass Effect games and Fallout 4. So it was clearly a no-brainer when they started Loot Gaming, a spin-off that sends subscribers a box of game-related fun stuff. But how do they decide what games to include, and what goes in a regular Loot Crate instead of the Loot Gaming one? To find out, I blindly sent the following questions to Loot Crate and was happily surprised when I got answers back from Mandie Roman, Loot Gaming’s Brand Creative Lead.
The biggest stigma when it comes to free-to-play games is that they’re not as deep, involved, or as good as games you pay for. But while that perception has been slowly dissipating, it may be entirely obliterated when third-person action game Let It Die is released for PlayStation 4. A raw, gritty hack & slash beat-’em-up made by Grasshopper Manufacture (Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer Is Dead), Let It Die may not cost anything to buy, but after playing it for a couple hours recently, I can attest that it feels like, well, not a million bucks, but certainly sixty. Heck, they even got Mark Hamill to do a voice for it. Though in talking to Game Director Hideyuki Shin about it afterwards, he was pleased I not only didn’t think it was a free-to-play game, but that I thought it was a Grasshopper-esque as well.
Funko have announced that they’ll release a POP! vinyl toy of Sweet Tooth from the Twisted Metal video games this January.
I have a confession to make. While I enjoyed the original Dishonored four years ago, and while I had fun when I got to play its sequel for an hour at an event about a month ago, my initial thought when my review copy of Dishonored 2 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC) arrived at my house this week was, “Uh, okay.” But as I started to play it, as I grew confident in my abilities and got caught up in the action, my feelings for this first-person stealth action game grew well beyond just “Uh, okay.”
Funko have announced that they’ll release a series of POP! toys for the Resident Evil video games this January to coincide with the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which will be out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24th.
Earlier this years, fans of car combat games, myself included, were deeply disappointed by the supremely subpar Carmageddon Max Damage (my review of which you can read here). Now we have Gas Guzzlers Extreme, which is now available on Xbox One, and coming soon to PlayStation 4, after years of being on PC. And while it’s far from perfect, it does have enough going for it to satisfy the itch that a certain something failed to do.
Since the Call Of Duty games moved from World War II to modern times with 2007’s Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I’ve been hoping that this first-person shooter series would go full-on science fiction (as opposed to the cyberpunk but still near future sci-fi of Call Of Duty: Black Ops III). Well, that time has finally come, and that game is…Titanfall 2. But it’s also Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC), which takes this series’ patented fluid controls, frantic firefights, explosively cinematic action, and addictive multiplayer where no Call Of Duty has gone before.
