Exclusive Interview: “The 500 Years Of Indigenous Resistance Comic Book” Writer & Artist Gord Hill

As a middle-aged, middle-class white man living in a good apartment in America, it would be easy for me to believe a white washed version of U.S. history, one where this land wasn’t stolen from the indigenous people already living here. But then accepting the truth, especially when it’s unpleasant, is never easy. Learning it, however, can be. Which brings me to Gord Hill, the writer and artist of The 500 Years Of Indigenous Resistance Comic Book: Revised And Expanded (paperback, Kindle), an updated version of his 2010 history lesson in graphic novel form. In the following email interview, Hill — a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw nation — discusses what inspired the original comic, as well as what prompted him to revisit and revise it for this new edition.

Exclusive Interview: “Whistle: A New Gotham City Hero” Author E. Lockhart

While reading fiction can take you places you might never imagine, the same can also be true of writing it, professionally-speaking. Take author E. Lockhart, whose work as a novelist led her to write Whistle: A New Gotham City Hero (paperback, Kindle), in which she not only introduces a new superhero, but — in a case of turnabout being fair play — also introduces a super sidekick with literary roots of her own.

Exclusive Interview: “The Orphan King” Writer Tyler Chin-Tanner & Artist James Boyle

While there have been a lot of interesting versions of the Arthurian Legends — including ones where genders are swapped or the setting is changed from medieval England to a futuristic Britain — not many have dealt with the core issues of the story. But in the first volume of their ongoing comic The Orphan King (paperback), writer Tyler Chin-Tanner and artist James Boyle deal more with the idea of why Arty got to be the king, not how or what he did once he took the job. In the following email interview, Tyler and James discusses what inspired and influenced this story, as well as their plans for Vol. 2.

Exclusive Interview: Embodied Co-Editors Wendy & Tyler Chin-Tanner

According to their website, the comic book company A Wave Blue World is, “…an independent publisher of high-quality graphic novels, anthologies, and art books, focusing on socially conscious storytelling and providing a platform for a multitude of creative voices.” But none of their books would seem to present this ideal better than Embodied: An Intersectional Feminist Comics Poetry Anthology (paperback, Kindle). In the following email interview with Wendy and Tyler Chin-Tanner, co-publishers of AWBW, and the co-editors of Embodied, they explain how this unique collection came together.

Exclusive Interview: “Hokusai: A Graphic Biography” Writer Francesco Matteuzzi & Illustrator Giuseppe Latanza

While you may not know his name, you undoubtedly know the work of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), who, as Hokusai, created such classic work as the iconic woodblock print series “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” But that could (and should) change thanks to Hokusai: A Graphic Biography (hardcover), a new biography written by Giuseppe Latanza and illustrated by Francesco Matteuzzi. In the following email interview — which was translated by Mauro Spagnol — Giuseppe and Francesco discuss how they came to make this visual biography, and what influenced their approach to it.

Exclusive Interview: “Dune, The Graphic Novel” Artists Patricia Martín & Raúl Allén

While it’s been fifty-five years since Frank Herbert published his epic sci-fi space opera novel Dune, its influence is still being felt. And no, not just in Star Wars stories. Not only is the novel being adapted into a pair of movies by Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, but there’s also a spin-off TV series in the works called Dune: The Sisterhood. But for those who’d rather read this epic (again), there’s a new graphic novel adaptation, one that’s drawn by illustrators Patricia Martín and Raúl Allén. In the following email interview, Martín and Allén discuss what went into the visual side of Dune, The Graphic Novel, Book 1 (hardcover, Kindle), the first of a three-part adaptation.

Please note: All answers come from both Patricia and Raúl unless otherwise indicated.

Exclusive Interview: Gears Of War: Hivebusters Author Kurtis J. Wiebe

Like in a lot of video games, the co-operative “Escape” mode in last year’s Gears 5 added some colorful characters to the sci-fi shooting series. Now players of that game, and “Escape” mode, can learn more about those characters in Gears Of War: Hivebusters (paperback, Kindle), which collects the five-issue miniseries (and which also, in the first edition, comes with a code for the “Mechanic Mac” character skin and a Hivebusters banner). In the following email interview, Weibe explains what went into writing this comic, including how his work on the game itself influenced its story.
