Having done two seasons in which one episode led to the next until the entire season was one long albeit loose story, the masterminds behind South Park decided to take a step back with their twenty-first season by having its ten episodes be stand-alone stories for the most part. Fittingly, it seems they’ve taken a similar approach to the extras on the South Park: The Complete Twenty-First Season Blu-ray and DVD.

As everyone knows, the best show on TV for the last thirty years is The Simpsons. So it’s not surprising that many of the better shows on TV are Simpsons-esque: 30 Rock, Rick & Morty, and now, The Good Place, a smart and surreal high concept sitcom. But whether you missed it when it aired on TV, or saw it and want to cherish it forever and ever, The Good Place The Complete First Season DVD is the best way to accomplish this. Though it could’ve been better.
As Game Of Thrones has shown so beautifully, it’s entirely possible to adapt a sprawling novel (or series of novels, as the case may be) into an equally impressive television show. The same can now also be said of Neil Gaiman’s 2001 fantasy novel American Gods. Though what’s great about the American Gods Season One Blu-ray and DVD is how its extras are almost as much about the original book as they are about the show.
Like most serial dramas, the zombie survival show The Walking Dead has had its good seasons and its bad. But one thing that’s been constant is that the show’s seasonal Blu-rays and DVDs have presented the show as was meant to be seen: with clean picture and tons of extras. And the same can be said about the newest one, The Walking Dead The Complete Seventh Season (Blu-ray, DVD). It’s just too bad it presents one of the bad seasons.
Like The Blacklist, Designated Survivor, and The Last Ship, the TV show Blindspot is a ridiculous, unrealistic, and over-the-top action show that’s like a weekly version of a big dumb action movie. Which is what makes it so much fun. Though what also makes the Blindspot The Complete Second Season Blu-ray and DVD so much fun is that it augments this explosive season with informative and interesting extras.
These days, the only reason to buy a TV show on Blu-ray or DVD is if you’re old school (like me) or you like the extras. So I have some good news, and some bad news, for fans of South Park and physical media: While the South Park The Complete Twentieth Season Blu-ray and DVD do have some good special features, they could’ve been presented better.
With tons of shooting, explosions, and people running after their shooting causes something to explode, the TV show The Last Ship has always felt like a really long action movie that’s been broken into smaller parts. Which is just one of the reasons why the best way to watch the latest episodes of this gripping action show is on the The Last Ship The Complete Third Season, which is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
As someone who prefers physical media over digital, and do so because the former usually offers better quality than the latter, I find it disheartening that so many content providers are not only discontinuing the former, but also dialing back on the quality of their physical releases. The latest example of which is Archer The Complete Season Seven, which is only available on DVD, not Blu-ray, and also doesn’t have the kind of extras that fans of the show might want.
For years, Adult Swim’s stop-motion sketch comedy show Robot Chicken has skewered everything from toys, video games, and other cartoons to movies, TV shows, and celebrities. But the reason it works so well is because it’s made by people who are big fans of the things they’re skewering. Which is good for fans of this show since it means their DVDs and Blu-rays are put together by people who know what fans of Robot Chicken would want on their DVDs and Blu-rays.
