Much like chocolate and peanut butter or Anthrax and Public Enemy, the idea of mixing of cyberpunk atmospheres and pulp crime aesthetics probably seemed weird before someone tried to do it (that someone being Philip K. Dick with his novella “Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?”). But we’re glad someone did since it’s led us to Shovel Ready, a new novel by Adam Sternbergh (Crown Publishing). In it, a hit man in the not-so-distant future is hired to whack an evangelist’s daughter, and, suffice it to say, it does not go well for our “hero.”

Gentle Giant have announced that the next release in their series of 12-inch tall replicas of Star Wars Kenner action figures will be Han Solo in the outfit he wore on Bespin in 1980’s Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
When you think about it, I mean really think about it, the best thing to be in a zombie apocalypse isn’t a cop or a army guy or a sword-swinging lady with cool hair. It’s a superhero. Well, one with superpowers, that is, not just some rich dude with parental abandonment issues. At least that what I’ve gleaned from the Ex- novels by Peter Clines, who explains what inspired these novels as well as both the zombies and superheroes in them.
BBC Home Video have announced that Doctor Who: The Time Of The Doctor — which marks Matt Smith’s final turn as the space shamus — will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 4th.

Summit Entertainment have announced that the sci-fi movie Ender’s Game will be released on DVD, in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack, and digitally on February 11th.
Elysium Blu-ray, DVD Review
Now available on DVD and Blu-ray, Elysium was one of the more interesting sci-fi movies of 2013. But it was also one of the most obviously flawed, and pointlessly so (as I noted in my review of the film).
But if you were able to get past its issues, the Blu-ray of the movie has lots of fun extras for fans of the film.
The DVD however…
BBC Home Video have announced that they’ll release Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor — the recently aired 50th anniversary special for the British sci-fi series — on DVD and in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack on December 10.
Killzone Shadow Fall (PlayStation 4) is a beautiful and accomplished dystopian sci-fi first-person shooter that really shows off what the new PlayStation 4 can do.
But it also, sadly, has a number of issues, including some obvious and easily avoided mistakes, as well as a problem that’s so prevalent lately that I really fear it will be a hallmark of this new generation.
