While some writers assemble short story collections around a theme, or connected with a framing device, most just pull together their latest and greatest…and then often find that a theme has emerged all on its own. Which is basically what happened to writer Kameron Hurley when she assembled Future Artifacts (paperback, audiobook), her second short story collection after 2019’s Meet Me In The Future. Well…except for the “latest” part.

With The Broken Heavens (paperback, Kindle), writer Kameron Hurley is concluding The Worldbreaker Saga trilogy she began in 2014 with The Mirror Empire and continued a year later with Empire Ascendant. In the following email interview, she not only talks about why writing this novel took longer than usual, and whether this is indeed the end of the story, but also about her two other new books: the sci-fi novel The Light Brigade and the short story collection Meet Me In The Future.

Lately it seems like every science fiction novel isn’t a self-contained story, but is instead part of a larger saga. But in trading emails with sci-fi writer Kameron Hurley about her novel The Stars Are Legion — which is newly available in paperback after already being in hardcover and on Kindle — she revealed that while it is a stand-alone tale, it was somewhat inspired by one of Hurley’s own larger sagas.
