Exclusive Interview: “Bea Wolf” Author Zach Weinersmith

The epic poem “Beowulf” has been adapted and reworked in numerous ways over the years. Neil Gaiman, for instance, not only cowrote the screenplay for the animated movie, but he also wrote his own poetic version, called “Bay Wolf” (from his collection Smoke And Mirrors), as well as a modernized novella titled The Monarch Of The Glenn (from his collection Fragile Things). And now writer Zach Weinersmith is retelling the tale — but with (and for) kids — in his new comic adaptation Bea Wolf (hardcover, Kindle). Though as he explains in the following email interview, he uses the word “kids” rather loosely.

Exclusive Interview: “Shubeik Lubeik” Author / Artist Deena Mohamed

If you know anything about wishes — be they granted by djinn, monkey’s paws, or some other magical way — you know there’s often a price to be paid. But what if the price was monetary; what if the more you paid for a wish, the more likely it would come true, and with no strings attached? This is the premise (sans the djinn) of Deena Mohamed’s first graphic novel, Shubeik Lubeik (hardcover, Kindle). In the following email interview, Mohamed explains where she got the idea for this urban fantasy tale, and what influenced it.

Exclusive Interview: “Rise Of Dracula” Writer Rich Davis

In the 125 years since Bram Stoker first published Dracula, a great many of his fellow writers have put their own unique spin on the character. But Rich Davis’ graphic novel Cult Of Dracula may be the first that, as he says in the following email interview, is, “…set within the friendly confines of a Manson Family inspired cult.” But this interview isn’t about Cult; it’s about the second installment of this comic book trilogy, Rise Of Dracula (paperback), in which Davis continues the story by veering even further from the Dracula we know and love.

Exclusive Interview: “The Orphan King” Writer Tyler Chin-Tanner & Artist James Boyle

While there have been a lot of interesting versions of the Arthurian Legends — including ones where genders are swapped or the setting is changed from medieval England to a futuristic Britain — not many have dealt with the core issues of the story. But in the first volume of their ongoing comic The Orphan King (paperback), writer Tyler Chin-Tanner and artist James Boyle deal more with the idea of why Arty got to be the king, not how or what he did once he took the job. In the following email interview, Tyler and James discusses what inspired and influenced this story, as well as their plans for Vol. 2.

Exclusive Interview: “4 Kids Walk Into A Bank” Author Matthew Rosenberg

We always like to talk about the innocence of children. But in the new graphic novel 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank (paperback, Kindle) by writer Matthew Rosenberg (Kingpin: Born Against) and artist Tyler Boss, the kids aren’t strolling into a financial institution to use the restroom or find their mommies; they’re looking to rob the place. Though in talking to Rosenberg about this comic collection, he revealed that this story didn’t actually start with the kiddies.

Exclusive Interview: “Becoming Unbecoming” Author Una

Some of the best art comes from when we explore difficult subjects. It’s something I thought about a lot when editing the following interview with Una, the writer and artist of the graphic novel memoir Becoming Unbecoming (paperback, digital), in which she explores the serial murders committed in the late-’70s by Peter Sutcliffe as a way to explore her experiences with sexualized violence. Especially since, according to UN Women, 35% of women worldwide have experienced, “either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives.” Though in talking to Una about the book, it was interesting — but not the least bit surprising — to learn that it wasn’t as much about Sutcliffe as you might expect.
