But that isn’t the case for the characters in Rumor Has It (hardcover, Kindle, audiobook), the third book in author Cat Rambo’s Disco Space Opera series.
As Rambo explains in the following email interview about this hopepunk- and military fantasy-infused science fiction space opera story, “things there don’t go as smoothly as they hoped.”
There are a lot of things mercenaries can do when they retire: start their own private military companies; train other mercenaries; ride off into the sunset…
But in Cat Rambo’s sci-fi space opera novel You Sexy Thing, some retired mercs started their own restaurant…only to still get into trouble of the mercenary kind.
Now they’re getting into even more trouble in Devil’s Gun, the second book in Rambo’s Disco Space Opera series. With that book newly released in paperback — and a third, Rumor Has It, coming September 24th — I spoke to Rambo about what inspired and influenced this second story, and this series.
You’d think with all the advances in technology lately that it would be difficult to get away with a crime. But then, they probably thought the same in the ’70s and the ’50s and so on.
That’s because for every advancement in crime prevention tech and crime investigation tech, there’s just as many in the tech used to commit crimes.
How will crime, and crime prevention evolve in the future? No one knows for sure, but it’s interesting to imagine the possibilities.
Or, more apropos, to read what other people imagine are the possibilities.
