“Sniper Elite: Resistance” Review

Violence is never the answer, even when you inflict it on someone terrible. Y’know, like Nazis.

But virtual violence? Like in, say, a video game? That’s okay. And, if done well, can be as cathartic as it is fun.

It’s why I’d never punch a Nazi in real life, but absolutely love playing the Sniper Elite games, a series of fun third-person stealth action shooters set during World War II in which you undermine the German military by, well, shooting, stabbing, and blowing up Nazis. And German soldiers. And their stuff.

I enjoy them so much, in fact, that I don’t even mind that the newest installment, Sniper Elite: Resistance (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), is basically just the previous one, 2022’s Sniper Elite 5, but with new locations and one new mode.

“Sniper Elite 5” Review

At a time when tired anti-Semitic conspiracy theories are being updated and mainstreamed — I’m looking at you, “Jewish space laser” lady — it’s nice to be able to vent my frustrations by shooting virtual Nazis in video games. And few games make this as satisfying as Sniper Elite 5 (Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC), a third-person, open world, stealth action World War II shooter that’s as deep and compelling as the best WWII gun games.

“Sniper Elite 4” Review

One of the downsides to both stealth games and sniper games is that constantly having to be slow and cautious can get tiresome.

But while the sneaky sniper game Sniper Elite 4 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch) avoids this pitfall by letting go all gun blazing when the situation arises, what really makes this such an exciting and addictive action game is where you do all your shooting.
