Sonny Rollins / Don Cherry: “Complete Live At The Village Gate 1962” Review

In July of 1962, saxophonist Sonny Rollins was joined by cornetist Don Cherry, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins for a four night stand at New York City’s Village Gate.

But while this quartet performed twenty songs during this engagement, only three were ever released (on Sonny’s album Our Man In Jazz), and even then, one of them was heavily edited.

Thankfully, the complete four night stint has now been released as a six-CD boxed set titled Complete Live At The Village Gate 1962. But while the music is great, the way it’s presented in this collection might irritate some picky purists.

The Walking Dead The Complete Fifth Season Blu-ray, DVD Review

The hope in a zombie apocalypse is to have things return to normal. Or, at the very least, to find some semblance of what used to be normal. But as we see in The Walking Dead The Complete Fifth Season — which is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and in a special limited edition Blu-ray — sometimes getting back to normal isn’t easy. Though, apparently, neither is putting together a Blu-ray or DVD or for a TV show about zombies.

Zombi Game Review (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

When the first-person survival horror game ZombiU came out in 2012, it showed how the WiiU’s tablet-like controller could be used for some inventive games. Which makes it all the more ironic that Zombi — a version of ZombiU for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC — is just as good as the original, even though it’s played with a more typical controller.

“Until Dawn” Game Review

Ever since Don Bluth made Dragon’s Lair in 1983, people have tried to make video games that were more like interactive movies, with varying degrees of success. But while Until Dawn (PlayStation 4) mostly manages to get the “interactive” part right, it doesn’t do so well in the “movie” department.

“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” Movie Review

In this ’60s spy spoofing TV show Get Smart, Agent 86 would often note that he or someone else had, “Missed it…by that much.” It’s how I felt while watching The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a serious spy movie…which was actually based on a different non-spoofing ’60s TV show. And while The Man From U.N.C.L.E. wasn’t terrible — in fact, it was better than many films based on TV shows, including the Get Smart movie — it does have a lot of little problems that keep it from really hitting its mark.

Turtle Beach i30 Wireless Mobile Media Headset Review

Given how little people seem to care about sound quality these days — as evidenced by the dominance of streaming and iTunes — it might seem odd to do a review of a headset based on how well they present music. But as someone who does care how well or badly his music sounds, not to mention his games and movies, that’s exactly what I did when the good people at Turtle Beach sent me a Turtle Beach i30 Wireless Mobile Media Headset ($199.99). And while they’re not perfect, I was pleasantly surprised at how good they work…and sound.

“Godzilla” Game Review

With the exception of the original Gojira, the Roland Emmerich’s 1998 in-name-only American edition, and 2014’s excellent comeback, most Godzilla movies have been rather low-budget. So it makes sense that this eponymous game — which was just released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 — would be low-budget-looking, too. It’s just too bad the gameplay is rather low-rent as well.

“Miles Davis At Newport 1955-1975 The Bootleg Series Vol 4” Review

Since launching in 2011’s with Live In Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol. 1, the Miles Davis Bootleg series has presented largely unheard (save for among hardcore collectors) and mostly complete live shows from some of the iconic jazz trumpeter’s best groups.

But now, with Miles Davis At Newport 1955-1975 The Bootleg Series Vol 4 (CD, digital), this series is switches gears, and instead of being dedicated to a single band, this has Miles playing eight shows with seven different groups over eight different years of the titular festival.

Ernest Cline “Armada” Book Review

Like a lot of kids, Zack Lightman — the main character of Ernest Cline’s second novel, Armada (hardcover, digital) — has dreamed about being a space pilot since he saw Star Wars. It’s one of many reasons he spends his free time playing a space dogfighting video game. But when the alien invaders from his favorite game invade Earth for real, Zack realizes he’s hasn’t been playing a game all these years, he’s been training.
