CHAPPiE Blu-ray & DVD Review
There are some very simple truths about characters. For instance: good guys have to be somewhat likeable. If the good guy in your story isn’t likeable, even a little, it’s hard to root for them. Sadly, this is just one of many problems with CHAPPiE (Blu-ray, DVD), a misfiring sci-fi movie from District 9 and Elysium writer/director Neill Blomkamp.
jupiter riAfter seeing their cinematic adaptations of the anime Speed Racer and David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas, fans of The Wachowskis were probably hoping that the duo would go back to writing their own movies, as they had with Bound and The Matrix trilogy. Well, as they say, “Be careful what you wish for,” because the Wachowski-penned space opera Jupiter Ascending — which is now available as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, a 3D Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and on DVD — is not the comeback their fans were hoping for.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that Powers The Complete First Season will be released on Digital HD on July 13, and then on Blu-ray and DVD on July 14.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that CHAPPiE, the sci-fi movie from District 9 and Elysium writer/director Neill Blomkamp, will be released digitally on May 29th, and then on Blu-ray and DVD on June 16th. Additional, all three of his movies will be available as the Blomkamp³ Limited Edition Collection Blu-ray.
Ever since DC kicked off their animated movie series with 2007’s Superman: Doomsday, some fans have wished these films were more R-rated than PG-13, especially when Batman’s involved. But while that’s still not the case with Batman Vs Robin — which is available from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, a limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack that includes a 4.5-inch tall statue of the Caped Crusader, and DVD — this does join last year’s Batman: Assault On Arkham and 2008’s Batman: Gotham Knight in being one of the darker of the Dark Knight’s animated adventures.
When done well, satire works on multiple levels. Which is what you get with HBO’s Silicon Valley, a funny, insightful, and rather spot-on spoof of the modern tech industry. But whether you want to watch the eight episodes again or for the first time, the best way is clearly on the Silicon Valley The Complete First Season Blu-ray…or DVD if you don’t haven’t upgraded to HD yet.
With The Hobbit The Battle Of The Five Armies, director Peter Jackson has concluded his epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic 1937 fantasy novel (and, most likely, the entire cinematic Middle-earth saga as well). But while the movie was a bit of a letdown in theaters, watching it again at home — be it on the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, the 3D Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, or DVD — oddly works much better.
When it comes to their superhero movies, Marvel Comics have always done much better with live action than animation; the three Iron Man films, for instance, are vastly superior to the animated Iron Man: Rise Of Technovore. But it seems they’ve broken with tradition with Big Hero 6, an entertaining CGI animated movie that Disney Home Video are releasing on Blu-ray and DVD.
