Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang’s Four Foot Shack Music Review

Never let it be said that Les Claypool plays it safe. As if the skewed music he’s made with Primus, on his own, and with such side bands as Oysterhead, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains, Les Claypool & The Rat Brigade, and Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade didn’t prove this hypothesis already, now he’s recorded Four Foot Shack, a country-flavored acoustic collection with guitarist/back-up singer Bryan Kehoe (formerly of M.I.R.V.) and, on three tracks, Stiff Dead Cat’s Wylie Woods on mandolin and background vocals, under the name Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang.

But what if — like me — you’re a fan of Les Claypool but not country? Don’t worry, you’ll be okay.

John Coltrane: “Afro Blue Impressions” Review

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Afro Blue Impressions by John Coltrane’s classic quartet is one of the best live jazz albums ever made, by him or anyone else, and represents a high water mark in the career of a true artist.

Now this classic collection has remastered and augmented for a new expanded edition (CD, digital, vinyl). And while it does have some issues, it’s still an improved version of an already great album.

Rush’s “Clockwork Angels Tour” Review

With Clockwork Angels Tour (CD, digital), the iconic rock band have released their fifth live album in ten years. Which, even to longtime fans, might seem like overkill. But with the group trying something different this time around — something they’ve never done before, and may never do again — this concert collection is the most unique live album the band have released in ten years, perhaps ever.

Keith Jarrett’s No End Review

To those with unadventurous ears, Keith Jarrett’s No End (CD, digital) might seem like apt title for this new (though not newly-recorded) album. Driven by Santana-esque guitars and rhythms, and employing rather loose structures, the tracks on this instrumental collection harkens back to the work Jarrett did with Miles Davis on such epic jazz-rock fusion albums as 1971’s A Tribute To Jack Johnson, 1970’s Miles Davis At Fillmore: Live At The Fillmore East, and 1971’s Live-Evil. But for those of us who appreciate loosely-structured, atmospheric instrumental soundscapes, calling this No End couldn’t be a less appropriate.
