Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that they’ll release four double feature Blu-rays of Godzilla movies from the 1990s and 2000s — a.k.a. the Heisi series and Millennium series — on May 6th. Which just happens to be 10 days before the new movie hits theaters.
The series will pair 1991’s Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah with 1992’s Godzilla And Mothra: The Battle For Earth (1992)…
…1993’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II and 1994’s Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla…
…1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and 2000’s Godzilla vs. Megaguirus…
and 2003’s Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. and 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.
This is, of course, not the first time Godzilla’s movies have been released on Blu-ray — Criterion, for instance, has an excellent version of the first movie, while 1962’s King Kong Vs. Godzilla, 1971’s Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (a.k.a. Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster), 1972’s Godzilla Vs. Gigan (a.k.a. Godzilla On Monster Island), 1973’s Godzilla Vs. Megalon, and 1989’s Godzilla Vs. Biollante have all come out on Blu-ray — but it is the first time these particular movies are being released in HD in the U.S.
Along with the films, all of which have been digitally remastered, each two-disc set will also include the original teaser and theatrical trails, as well as digital copies of the films.
In addition, the Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S./Godzilla: Final Wars collection will include a making-of featurette on the former movie and a behind-the-scenes featurette on the latter.
