Anchor Bay have announced that they will release a Ghost In The Shell 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on September 30th.
Based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow — who also wrote Appleseed — and directed by Mamouru Oshii (The Sky Crawlers) for Production I.G. (Blood: The Last Vampire), 1995’s Ghost In The Shell is a cyberpunk classic about a group of cybernetically-enhanced cops who fight terrorists.
This influential movie not only spawned a sequel, 2004 Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence, but a TV series as well, Ghost In The Show: Stand Alone Complex, which lasted two seasons as well as a movie, 2006’s Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society. It also got a visual and aural update with 2008’s Ghost In The Shell 2.0, which enhanced the visuals with upgraded CGI while replacing some of the voice actors with those from Ghost In The Shell 2 and Stand Alone Complex.
More recently, the people behind Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex launched Ghost In The Shell: Airse, a series of four movies, but so far the Blu-ray of it is only available in the U.S. as an import.
The Ghost In The Shell 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray presents the original version of the movie with a new HD transfer.
In addition, the Ghost In The Shell 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will feature both the original Japanese audio as well as the original English dub, with the former being presented in stereo and the latter in 5.1 surround.
However, the Ghost In The Shell 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will not include any extras, not even the ones that were included on any of the previous Ghost In The Shell Blu-rays.
The Ghost In The Shell 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will retail for $29.99.
