“Spider-Man” (2018) Review

It’s funny how all the talk of licensed games always being terrible goes right out the window when the thing being licensed is a comic book. Take the interactive adventures of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While he’s had some terrible games, people mostly remember such good ones as Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows, Ultimate Spider-Man, and, of course, Spider-Man 2. Thankfully, it is the latter category that that we find Spider-Man (PlayStation 4, PS4 Collector’s Edition), the wall-crawler’s newest adventure, and first from the good people of Insomniac Games.

Ant-Man And The Wasp Movie Review

The original Ant-Man is one of Marvel’s lesser movies; a fun action movie that was undercut by bad and obvious jokes and a predictable plot. But while Ant-Man And The Wasp isn’t a complete reversal of course, it is a notable improvement in many ways.

Black Panther Blu-ray Review

Black Panther is not only one of the more interesting and accomplished superhero movies ever made, it’s also the smartest and most socially-aware Marvel movie. Which is why it’s gratifying that the Black Panther Blu-ray has so many great extras, but also frustrating that it’s missing some key ones.

Avengers Infinity War Movie Review

It would be easy to spend a thousand words talking about the technical achievement that is Avengers Infinity War. How it makes such a massive cast all fit without sacrificing any of them; how it’s the culmination of everything that Marvel Studios have been building towards over the course of eighteen films; and how it feels like a comic book come to life. And I’ll get to that. But if you know nothing else about Avengers Infinity War, know this: it is a kick ass action flick that’s clever and funny and heartbreaking and probably the most fun you will have at the movies this year.

“Thor: Ragnarok” Blu-ray, 4K, DVD Review

While it was far from perfect, Thor: Ragnarok was still an exciting and unapologetically fun action movie. Not surprisingly, you can say the same about the home versions — the Blu-ray, DVD, Digital combo pack; the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, Digital combo pack; and the DVD — which have a lot of fun extras…but should’ve been better.

Black Panther Movie Review

Ever since Marvel Studios began their box office hot streak with 2008’s Iron Man, some so-called “serious” film fans and critics have lamented that these movies are nothing more than cinematic popcorn, devoid of any real substance. But that’s the last thing they’ll be able to say about Black Panther, which is not only the most serious Marvel movie to date, but the most socially-conscious and thought-provoking as well.

Thor Ragnarok Review

While they’re not the worst Marvel movies, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 2 would’ve been so much better without the cheesy visual tricks and cheap reliance on bad music. But while Thor Ragnarok has an even more obvious soundtrack, a similarly silly score, and just as much needless slo-mo, it somehow all works to make this the best Thor movie yet.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Movie Review

As someone who doesn’t appreciate cheesy, crowd-pleasing jokes or moments of emotional manipulation, I found the original Guardians Of The Galaxy to be an epic, clever, but problematic sci-fi space opera. Now we have Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, and while it has everything that made the first one so much fun, it also has many of the same problems as well.

Doctor Strange Movie Review

In the comics, Doctor Strange, like Ant-Man and Thor, has often worked better as a supporting character or as the member of a group than on his own. Which is both sad and odd, since he’s a rather interesting guy. So it’s a rather pleasant surprise that while the Doctor Strange movie isn’t as solid as The Avengers, Iron Man, or Captain America movies, it is much stronger — and, more importantly, more interesting — than Ant-Man and both Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
