Ghost In The Shell Blu-ray, DVD Review

We all know that box office receipts are not a good way to determine if a movie is good or bad. The problem is that if a movie does badly at the box office, the studio making the film’s Blu-rays and DVDs will skimp on the extras. Which, sadly, is the case with Ghost In The Shell (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, 3D Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD, DVD), the cyberpunk action flick that has its fans — myself included — but not enough box office clout to warrant the extras-packed discs its fans want.

“Kong: Skull Island” Blu-ray, DVD Review

In 1962, two of the biggest movie stars in the world went mano-a-mano in the classic monster movie King Kong Vs. Godzilla. With shared universes all the rage these days (thanks Avengers), the people behind 2014’s Godzilla have taken the next step to reuniting these two titans with Kong Skull Island (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, a 3D Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, DVD), the second film in the MonsterVerse series that will also include 2019’s Godzilla: King Of Monsters before 2020’s rematch, Godzilla Vs. King Kong. It’s just too bad Kong: Skull Island is less like the epic Iron Man and more like the just-okay Ant-Man.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Movie Review

As someone who doesn’t appreciate cheesy, crowd-pleasing jokes or moments of emotional manipulation, I found the original Guardians Of The Galaxy to be an epic, clever, but problematic sci-fi space opera. Now we have Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, and while it has everything that made the first one so much fun, it also has many of the same problems as well.

Colossal Movie Review

When I was a kid, I spent many afternoons watching such Godzilla movies as Godzilla Vs. Hedora (a.k.a. Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster) and Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla over and over on TV. But the one I could never abide was All Monsters Attack, in which a Japanese schoolboy is being bullied at school, so he imagines that Godzilla’s baby-faced son, Minya, is his BFF. Especially since Minya, for some stupid reason, speaks Japanese. Or rather English in the version they showed on TV.

Rogue One A Star Wars Story Blu-ray, DVD Review

While most people follow the Star Wars story through the movies, the saga has also been told through novels, comics, cartoons, and video games. But while the two are often kept at arm’s length, the newest movie Rogue One A Star Wars Story — which is now available on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and DVD — is actually an exciting and engaging Star Wars movie that tells a story that would normally have been reserved for a book, graphic novel, or game. Too bad the Blu-ray and DVD aren’t as good as the movie.

Ghost In The Shell Movie Review

In the twenty-eight years since Masamune Shirow first published his manga Ghost In The Shell, this cyberpunk story has been adapted into an animated movie (also called Ghost In The Shell) that inspired a sequel (Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence), an anime TV series (Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex) that got its own movie (Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society), and a second animated series (Ghost In The Shell: Arise) that, of course, had a movie of its own as well (Ghost In The Shell: The New Movie). But what makes the new live action version of Ghost In The Shell unique is not just that it’s the first adaptation that wasn’t drawn (obviously), but how it remixes elements from the animated adaptations into something new and cool.

Suicide Squad Extended Cut Blu-ray, DVD review

Like Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice before it, Suicide Squad was a comic book adaptation that got some things right but most things wrong. So it’s fitting that the Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD of the Suicide Squad Extended Cut — which includes both the original and a longer version of the film as well as a compliment of extras — would be equally uneven.

Doctor Strange Movie Review

In the comics, Doctor Strange, like Ant-Man and Thor, has often worked better as a supporting character or as the member of a group than on his own. Which is both sad and odd, since he’s a rather interesting guy. So it’s a rather pleasant surprise that while the Doctor Strange movie isn’t as solid as The Avengers, Iron Man, or Captain America movies, it is much stronger — and, more importantly, more interesting — than Ant-Man and both Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
