“Mighty Doom” Review

Under normal circumstances, there’s no reason to read a review of a free game (and thus no reason to write one). Reviews are supposed to tell you whether you should spend your money on something. If a game is free, you can just try it for yourself.

But along with advising you to buy something that’s good, or warning you not to buy something that’s bad, reviews are also supposed to expose you to good things you might not know about. Which is why I wrote this review of Mighty Doom (iOS, Android). After the debacle that was Diablo Immortal — by which I mean the way people overreacted to its monetary aspects, not the game itself, the game was good — I worry that some people view think this arcade shooter, which is also a mobile version of a console / PC game, is just as a cash grab, and thus miss out on all of its gun-ny goodness.

“Diablo Immortal” Review

Under normal circumstances, I don’t see the point in reviewing a game that’s free. Why read a review when you can just play the game yourself? And while that’s certainly true for the free-to-play third-person fantasy action / adventure game Diablo Immortal (iOS, Android, PC), it requires so much of your tablet’s or phone’s memory that you might wonder whether or not it’s worth it. But take it from someone who deleted multiple games, some photos, and a bunch of apps when I say that yes, yes it is.

“Puzzle Quest 3” Review

Here’s a little tip for you: If you ever see a review of a mobile game on this site, it’s safe to assume one of two things: it’s either a lot of fun or so terrible that I feel a moral obligation to warn everyone not to get it, even if it’s free. Thankfully, the free-to-play, fantasy-themed match-3 puzzle game Puzzle Quest 3 (iOS, Android, PC) is decidedly in the former category.

Williams Pinball Monster Pack For Pinball FX3 Review

While the proposed Monsterverse movie series is deader than a zombie with a gunshot to the head, the Universal Monsters are still very much alive and kicking. Or biting as the case may be. Director Guillermo Del Toro has said repeatedly that his movie Shape Of Water was inspired by Creature From The Black Lagoon, while the creator of the titular creature, Millicent Patrick, was recently the subject of Mallory O’Meara’s excellent biography / memoir The Lady From The Black Lagoon. There’s also the BBC’s upcoming BBC miniseries, Dracula, which clearly owes as much to Universal’s 1931 movie as it does Bram Stoker’s novel, while the entire film series recently inspired the board game Horrified: Universal Monsters.

And now two of their classic pinball tables are being brought back to life in the Williams Pinball Monster Pack for Pinball FX3 (Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Switch, PC, Mac, iOS, Android). Which is good news for both monster mashers and pinball lovers alike.

Donut County Review

At first glance, the physics-based puzzle game Donut County (PlayStation 4, iOS, PC) seems like it’s devoid of any challenge. But while it may not be as difficult as Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy, there is some thought needed if you want to beat this rather clever game.

Star Wars Pinball The Last Jedi Review

Whether you thought it was triumph or a tragedy, there’s no denying that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was one of the most divisive movies in the Star Wars saga. Thankfully, the same cannot be said about the two tables that comprise the Star Wars Pinball The Last Jedi collection for Pinball FX3 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC) and Zen Pinball (iOS, Mac, Android), which will satisfy fans of pinball as well as people who both loved and loathed The Last Jedi.

Jurassic World Pinball Review

In honor of the movie Jurassic Park turning twenty-five this year — and, of course, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom turning 0 when it’s released on June 22nd — the good people at Zen Studios have put together Jurassic World Pinball, a trio of new virtual pinball tables for Pinball FX 3 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Switch), Zen Pinball (iOS, Android), and Zen Pinball 2 (Mac). It’s just too bad that, as with the movies, not all of them are keepers.

Shoot The Dragons Review

As an old fool who likes to kick it old school (well, sometimes), I always appreciate when someone makes a side-scrolling shooter that brings me back to the days of Defender, Gradius, and R-Type. Which is why I spent the last couple days playing Shoot The Dragons (iOS), a simple but addictive free-to-play shoot-’em-up that made me want to stick quarters into my iPad.
